Function Was Never the Problem
Most things are designed to do something.
To solve.
To fix.
To improve a situation that isn’t working.
That’s where design usually begins.
With a problem.
And a function to address it.
That was where we started looking too.
What does this do?
What is it for?
What outcome should it create?
Because that’s how products are supposed to be understood.
But the more we looked, the less function explained what we were seeing.
There were products that worked.
They did what they were meant to do.
And yet, something still felt unresolved.
Not wrong.
Not broken.
Just… not complete.
It made us question something we had taken for granted.
What if the problem wasn’t a lack of function?
What if function was already there —
but something else was missing?
Not something that fixes.
But something that shapes how it is experienced.
Not what it does.
But how it exists on the body.
How it moves.
How it stays.
Because even when something works,
the body still responds to how it feels.
And that response is not solved by function alone.
What it is meant to do
A product can perform correctly and still leave something unresolved in how it is lived with.
How it is carried
The body continues to respond not only to outcome, but to movement, presence, and felt condition.
That was when the starting point shifted.
Not from what a product should do,
but from what it should carry.
Not function.
But condition.
Something quieter.
Less direct.
But always present.
Because sometimes,
nothing needs to be added.
Only rethought.

- The starting point — the question moved from solving a problem to shaping a condition.
- The design lens — not only what something does, but how it exists, moves, and stays on the body.
Sometimes the issue is not that a product fails.
It is that function alone cannot account for how something is actually experienced.
